AEO vs SEO: What's the Difference, and Does Your Business Need Both?

A customer used to type "roof repair Minneapolis" into Google, scan ten blue links, and click two or three.

Now a lot of them ask a full question instead. "Who should I call for an ice dam on a 1920s house in south Minneapolis?" Sometimes they ask Google and get an AI Overview at the top. Sometimes they skip Google and ask ChatGPT or Perplexity. Either way, they get an answer with a few names in it.

That shift is where the term AEO came from. If you have been hearing it and wondering whether it replaces SEO, this is the plain version.

What SEO is

SEO, search engine optimization, is the work of getting your pages to rank in traditional search results. It covers the things most business owners have heard about for years:

  • Technical health. Fast pages, clean indexing, a site search engines can crawl without tripping.
  • On page work. Titles, headings, and content that match what people search for.
  • Local signals. A complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings, and steady reviews.
  • Authority. Other credible sites linking to and mentioning you.

The goal is a ranking. Someone searches, sees your result, and clicks.

What AEO is

AEO, answer engine optimization, is the work of getting your business named inside the answer itself. The answer might be a Google AI Overview, a ChatGPT response, a Perplexity summary, or a voice assistant reply.

The goal is not a click on a list. It is being the business the tool is confident enough to recommend. You will also hear this called GEO, generative engine optimization, or simply AI search optimization. For a local business, they describe the same job.

Where AEO and SEO overlap

More than the hype suggests. Google says it directly in its own documentation for site owners: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." The same Google Search Central guide points owners back to fundamental SEO best practices.

So a site that is slow, thin, or hard to crawl will struggle in both places. A business with no reviews and an inconsistent address will struggle in both places. The foundation is shared.

Where they differ

The difference is in what gets rewarded once the foundation is in place.

SEO rewards relevance to a keyword. A page built around "Minneapolis plumber" can rank for "Minneapolis plumber."

AEO rewards clear, specific answers to real questions. AI tools pull sentences they can quote and facts they can verify. A page that plainly says which neighborhoods you serve, how fast you can start, what a typical project includes, and what you do not do gives them material to work with.

SEO measures clicks. AEO is harder to see. When someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation and then calls you, that visit may never show up in your analytics. You have to test it by asking the tools yourself and by asking new customers how they found you.

SEO tolerates some vagueness. AEO does not. A generic service page might still sit on page two of Google. In an AI answer there is no page two. You are named or you are not.

What AEO work actually looks like

At Evoke we treat AEO as a layer on top of solid SEO, not a separate project. In practice, it comes down to a handful of habits.

Answer formatting

Use question based headings, then answer the question in the first sentence or two below it. Follow with detail. Short, direct answers are easy for an AI tool to lift without rewriting you. FAQ sections, like the one at the bottom of this post, help for the same reason.

Entity consistency

Your business name, address, phone, hours, and services should match everywhere: your site, your Google Business Profile, Facebook, directories, and industry listings. Conflicting details lower a tool's confidence that it has the right facts about you.

Specific, verifiable content

Name real service areas. Describe your actual process. Show your own photos. State credentials and licenses. Generic copy that could belong to any company in any city gives AI tools nothing to grab.

Third party mentions and reviews

Mentions on local news sites, chambers, associations, and partner pages turn your claims into facts. Reviews that describe the job, the location, and the result are far more useful than a bare star rating.

Structured data

Schema markup states your business details in a machine readable format. It will not rescue a weak site, but it removes guesswork from the facts you do have.

We covered the "why" behind several of these in Why AI Search Recommends Some Businesses and Ignores Others.

So which one do you need?

Both, in this order.

Start with SEO fundamentals. If your site is slow, your Google Business Profile is half finished, or your service pages are thin, fix that first. Those problems hurt you everywhere.

Then layer AEO on top. Rewrite key pages to answer real customer questions. Add FAQs. Clean up your listings. Earn a few quality mentions. Ask for descriptive reviews.

Then test. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google the questions your customers ask. Note who gets named. If it is not you, look at what those businesses have that you do not.

The good news for most small and midsize businesses is that AEO does not require a new website or a new budget line. It requires being specific and consistent, which is also what a careful customer wanted all along.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO. Google states that the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features, and AI tools still rely on pages that are crawlable, credible, and clear. Think of AEO as SEO written for questions instead of keywords.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

In practice, very little. GEO, generative engine optimization, is another name for optimizing to appear in AI generated answers. Some people use AEO for answer boxes and voice assistants and GEO for tools like ChatGPT, but the work overlaps almost completely.

How do I know if my business shows up in AI answers?

Test it directly. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google the questions a customer would ask, including your city or neighborhood. Repeat the test monthly, and ask new customers how they found you, since AI referrals often do not appear in analytics.

How long does AEO take to work?

It depends on your starting point. Listing cleanup and page rewrites can be done in weeks, but earning reviews and third party mentions takes months. Like SEO, it compounds over time. Our post on how long SEO takes to work covers similar timelines.
